Research Day: October 3, 2019

Thanks to all who participated in Research Day on October 3rd, 2019. Approximately 65 people attended the full-day event, with another seven joining us for the afternoon discussion about Indigenous data via livestream. Despite some technical difficulties, the day was productive and engaging, with lots of lively conversation and great connections made. Musqueam Elder Debra Sparrow provided a beautiful and heartfelt welcome. Next, participants were introduced to the IRSI team. After a short break, we went around the room so that each participant could share their research work and interests. A variety of innovative and worthwhile initiatives were shared and a number of participants presented posters; see some of the posters below.

After lunch, we presented a short overview video about IRSI – technical issues overcome! The afternoon session focused on Indigenous data. IRSI’s Associate Director Lerato Chondoma gave an overview of the Data Demonstration Project that IRSI is currently working on in collaboration with the First Nations Information Governance Centre (FNIGC). The presentation inspired a lively a discussion about the importance of ensuring that Indigenous data, information and records are respectfully collected, managed and—if appropriate—repatriated.

IRSI Research Manager Marliese Dawson coordinated the event and will continue to reach out to and engage with researchers involved in Indigenous collaborations at UBC. Feel free to connect with Marliese.
